Calicanto are a group from the Northern
Italian region of Veneto who have been delving into the area's musical history for some
fifteen years, reconstructing traditional folk instruments, re-evoking sounds of the past
and singing in the dialect of the region.
Their latest album, entitled "Venexia", was created under the pretext of an
anniversary, namely the bicentenary of the fall of the Venetian Republic 17th October
1797.
The album is obviously dedicated to Venice and this unique city
was also a source of inspiration for "Venexia"; particular significance is given
by the group to those aspects of the city which in their opinion make it a truly great
place: a taste for all things new, tolerance towards all things different and a curiosity
and opening towards the Orient.
With "Venexia" and the accompanying 'concert da mar'
('sea concerts') Calicanto are also aiming to give out a cry of hope for their Venexia, a
city which is both loved and hated at the same time, a city which is often crowded and yet
ever more alone.
And all of this is of course conveyed in usual Calicanto style, using tales of the past to
be able to speak without rhetoric about the present.
